2017 North Penn High School Engineering Academy |  Engineering Design and Development
Nanotechnology and Engineering Presentation
 

Lansdale, PA (May 8, 2017) - Students of the North Penn High School Engineering Academy will be presenting their nanotechnology and engineering research on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the audion at North Penn High School. 

Throughout the evening, students will present innovative ways they have designed and tested solutions to tackle some of the most pressing energy, healthcare and environmental problems facing our world today.  Their innovative approaches to problem solving, experimental design and STEM research was made possible through generous grant funding from the North Penn Educational Foundation, the Dow Chemical Company, the Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium and many other leading businesses and organizations.

Following the first half of the presentation in the Audion, there will be a poster session in the auxiliary gymnasium for questions and answers, demonstrations of their research, a scanning electron microscope demonstration from Hitachi and Angstrom Scientific, demonstrations and examples of work from other courses in the engineering academy and much more!

Eight North Penn High School Engineering Academy seniors in the Engineering Design and Development  (EDD) course just returned from their trip to London!

The students, Anthony Brigidi, James Drinkwater, Jason Ellstrom, Engy Khoshit, TJ Schmidt, Scott Schrum, Noah Wendt and Jake Yoder represented all 27 EDD students the the EDD classes at the International Science Conference at St. Paul's School in London.  This is the first time that a school from the United States has been invited to present their research at this conference!

The students spent their first few days in London experiencing the culture, learning how to travel The Tube (London underground rail system) and the rich history!

On Friday morning, March 10th, the North Penn students travelled to St. Paul's School to participate in the International Science Conference.  They were joined with students from 21 different schools in five countries: Belgium, Germany, Japan, USA and The United Kingdom!

The conference day opened with an introduction to the conference by Dr. Ken Zetie, Director of Outreach and Academic Partnerships, St Paul's School, London.  Throughout the conference, discussions were given by professionals from Hitachi, Deben UK Limited, Young Scientist Journal and the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS).

Presentations (Talks) were offered throughout the day from ten different International student groups.  North Penn's teams of students presented their talks after lunch and did an outstanding job!  After each presentation, the audience could offer questions to the presenters and the North Penn students did an outstanding job fielding questions from the international audience.

After the talks were completed, conference attendees were given the opportunity to vote for the best talk and North Penn's NAS Tek team: Engy Khoshit, Scott Schrum and Noah Wendt won the best overall presentation award!  Awards were offered and presented by Gary Edwards from Deben UK Limited, a precision engineering company.

On Saturday, March 11th, the students travelled back to St. Paul's School to participate in an International Science Challenge. The students were split into mixed teams and had two different challenges they had to complete. 

The first challenge required the students to design, construct and test a device that will be dropped three stories.  It was judged on two characteristics: (1) Time it takes to descend.  The device that takes the longest time will receive the most points. (2) Accuracy.  The closest to the bulls-eye marker yields the highest points. 

The second challenge was an electrical challenge.  The students had to determine circuit values within an enclosed box utilizing only the supplied meters and power supplies.  A great time was had by all participants!

The rest of the evening on Saturday was spent travelling throughout London.  Before we knew it... it was time to leave on Sunday morning!

North Penn Students Headed to London to Present Projects

It's a mouthful to say and hard to understand what students are studying in Michael Boyer's nanotechnology and engineering research classes at North Penn High School:

  • Advanced anode and cathode materials for magnesium air fuel cells

  • Photovoltaic, thermoelectric and piezoelectric energy harvesting roof system

  • Microencapsulated non-Newtonian based concussion prevention materials

But international educators have taken notice.

Boyer and three teams of students are the first from the United States to be invited to present research next month at an international science conference at St. Paul's School in London.

Dr. Perkins visits from St. Paul's School in London.  Invites EDD students to present at International Science Conference in March!

The North Penn High School (NPHS) Technology and Engineering Education Department was very pleased to welcome Dr. James Perkins from St. Paul's School in London for an observational visit in November.

James Perkins is a physics teacher and head of science research at St. Paul's School, one of the leading independent schools in the United Kingdom. St. Paul's recently purchased a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) capabilities and Perkins has been developing a program of research, enrichment and outreach opportunities in the UK using this capital equipment.  Click here to read more

Wireless Energy Transfer:  Proof of Concept: Done!  60 Watt Light Bulb: Next!

EDD research team, NAS Tek is in the process of developing a wireless energy transfer system.  They hope to be able to safely  light a 60 watt light bulb without wires connected directly to an AC wall outlet.  The images below show their initial proof of conect using a DC power source and a light emitting diode.  Check back soon for more research!

Anna Janoff, 2016 Georgia Tech and 2012 NP Engineering Academy Graduate, Speaks with Engineering Academy Seniors

Towamencin - Designing a nanofiber based transdermal patch to improve the infusion of insulin into the blood stream.  This was the senior design activity that Anna Janoff had performed during her senior year while in North Penn's Engineering Academy.

Flash forward four years!  Anna will be graduating with Bachelors of Engineering degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Georgia Tech next month!

During her visit, Anna shared her experiences at Georgia Tech, the research she performed, travelling abroad, applying for jobs and much more.  She met with many of the students who shared their research endeavors with her.  She experienced the Virtual System that the EVRT team is working on and received a demonstration of the electrospinning process.

Anna is graduating next month and has already secured a job with a leading aluminum manufacturing company!

A Visit from St. Paul's School - Research in Schools
Michael Boyer, Technology and Engineering Education Department Chair and Engineering Academy Instructor

Towamencin - Physics teacher and head of science research at St. Paul's School, London, UK, Dr. James Perkins, recently traveled from London to visit Michael Boyer and the Nanotechnology and Engineering Research program, The Future is N.E.A.R., in North Penn High School's Engineering Academy. 

Dr. Perkins was recently awarded a Hitachi Scanning Electron Microscope with EDS capabilities and is currently in the process of designing and implementing a research program at St. Paul's School in London.  He was awarded the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust fellowship to fund his visit to schools and organizations around the United States to to gather information, share good practices and develop networks regarding the wider idea of doing advanced research in a high school environment.

During his visit to North Penn, Dr. Perkins met with students and administrators to gain a first hand perspective about the challenges and successes of implementing and running a Nanotechnology and Engineering research program, the Engineering Academy and to learn about other research endeavors at North Penn High School.  

After visiting North Penn, Dr. Perkins will travel to the west coast to visit schools in California and Canada.

Furthermore, Mr. Boyer and his research students received an invitation to travel to St. Paul's School, London, in March to participate in an International Science Conference!  Plans are underway to make this amazing opportunity a reality for North Penn's Engineering Academy seniors!
